The West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation is proud to announce the successful completion of Phase I of the Surgical Suite Upgrade Project, marking a major step forward in enhancing advanced surgical care here in Parry Sound for everyone who lives, works, camps and cottages in the region.

Thanks to the generosity of local residents, seasonal residents, and community partners, the WPSHC Foundation has raised $1.1 million to replace and upgrade equipment and technology in the West Parry Sound Health Centre surgical suite.
Government funding in Ontario does not cover the purchase or replacement of hospital equipment and technology. That’s why donor support remains essential to sustaining advanced health care for everyone who lives, works and vacations in the Parry Sound region.

The Surgical Suite Upgrade Project is a $2.5 million investment in advanced surgical care at the West Parry Sound Health Centre. Phase I included the floor-to-ceiling upgrade of the operating suite and the modernization of the Medical Device Reprocessing Department (MDRD) — the essential service that cleans, sterilizes, and prepares surgical equipment for every procedure.

“This milestone reflects the strength and generosity of our community,” said Deborah Loosemore, CEO, WPSHC Foundation. “Every donor who contributed to Phase I has helped ensure that people living in and visiting our region can access high-quality surgical care here in Parry Sound. For many patients and their families, this will help eliminate the stress and expense of traveling long distances for surgical procedures.”

This project was kicked off with a generous pledge from the Weston Family Foundation and an Anonymous donor. This was followed by more than 800 other donors who stepped up to help reach this goal.

"These investments ensure that the West Parry Sound Health Centre continues to provide efficient and compassionate advanced surgical care to visitors and residents of Parry Sound." said Donald Sanderson, CEO, West Parry Sound Health Centre.

Strengthening Surgical Care in Parry Sound

The West Parry Sound Health Centre serves as a vital link between Northern and Southern Ontario, positioned along one of Canada’s busiest highway corridors. The hospital supports a growing year-round population, as well as an influx of more than 400,000 seasonal residents and short-term visitors each summer.

West Parry Sound Health Centre’s three operating rooms and endoscopy suite support a wide range of procedures, including general surgery, orthopedic surgery, cancer treatment, diagnostic services, and emergency care. With Phase I nearing completion, West Parry Sound Health Centre is preparing to reintroduce and expand key surgical specialties that have been limited in Parry Sound for several years.

Phase II: Investing in the Future of Surgical Excellence

With Phase I complete, the Foundation is turning its attention to Phase II — a $1.4 million effort to acquire essential equipment and technology to support expanded surgical services. New urology, ophthalmology, and orthopedic surgeons are joining the hospital’s surgical team, improving access to services critical to community health. In addition, West Parry Sound Health Centre is adding new surgical support for breast cancer treatment.

“We’ve seen what’s possible when this community comes together,” added Deborah Loosmeore. “With continued support, we can continue to ensure that every surgery at West Parry Sound Health Centre is performed with the most advanced equipment and technology available.”
