A Life-Saving Moment: Margaret’s Story

At the West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation, we often hear stories that remind us just how critical your support is. One of those stories comes from Margaret Aerola, a retired healthcare professional, long-time volunteer, and dedicated supporter of our hospital.

Last April, Margaret attended a gathering with fellow volunteers - something she had done many times before. But that day took an unexpected turn.

She suddenly experienced intense, searing pain - so severe that it left her struggling to stay present. Initially, Margaret thought she should simply go home and rest. Thankfully, her friends urged her to visit the Emergency Department.

“I knew the importance of taking swift action. But this time, it was different. This time, I was the patient,” says Margaret.

Our skilled hospital team acted quickly. What Margaret believed to be a back injury turned out to be a perforated gastric ulcer, a condition that could have been life-threatening without immediate diagnosis and treatment.

Thanks to the expert care she received and the advanced diagnostic tools made possible by generous donor support, Margaret’s life was saved.

“Every piece of diagnostic equipment used during my emergency was here because of the support of our donor community,” Margaret shares. “In my moment of need, the tools you helped provide genuinely saved my life.”

Your Gift Is More Than a Donation — It’s a Lifeline

Margaret’s experience is a powerful reminder that medical emergencies can happen to anyone, at any time. When they do, having access to high-quality, local healthcare can make all the difference.

“Without your generosity, the state-of-the-art equipment wouldn’t be here,” she says. “And the best doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals wouldn’t come to work at our hospital. It’s that simple.”

As we welcome spring a season of renewal and hopewe are asking our community to come together once again to support local care.

“Your generosity will ensure that our hospital continues to offer the same kind of life-saving care I received,” Margaret says. “Imagine knowing that the equipment, facilities, and compassionate care will be there for your family, your neighbours, and your community—whether you're in Parry Sound for a month, a few days, or a lifetime.”
