Whispering Pines and Hava Java – Retail outlets managed by volunteers with the WPSHC Auxiliary
When not under Public Health restrictions due to COVID-19, Auxiliary volunteers manage and serve customers at the Hava Java Coffee Shop and the Whispering Pines Gift Shop both located in the lobby of the Health Centre. Actively creating quilts for the annual quilt raffle plus fulfilling many other roles, the Auxiliary is endlessly involved in money-making endeavours. More recently, the Auxiliary has a Volunteer Services Coordinator, Kristen Millett Lomas who is supporting the broader management of volunteers in the Health Centre. Volunteers in this broader reach of the Auxiliary help with patient services providing invaluable support to our medical personal and our patients.
While completing a $250,000 pledge over 5 years in support of the Foundation’s $6.2 million commitment to modernizing patient records to a digital format (EHR), the Auxiliary is also buying our medical team 1 Vital Signs machine in John’s Ride this summer.
A little history on our Auxiliary
Formed in 1927, the Auxiliary has been a force in the Parry Sound community for almost a century.
In the early days, the Auxiliary’s focus was saving money not making it. Back then, our volunteer service crafted many useful things. Even the hospital’s sheets were made by the volunteers to keep the hospital from spending treasured equipment money on practical, easily made items. In this way, the Auxiliary undertook a multitude of money saving tasks to ensure the hospital spent its money on items needed for patient care.
Over the many decades, the Auxiliary has transformed into a full-fledged wealth creation partner to the Health Centre and Foundation. The Auxiliary raises thousands of dollars each year and this money is dedicated to purchasing much needed equipment.
In 2019 (the last full year volunteers were able to operate inside the Health Centre prior to the COVID-19 pandemic), Auxiliary members clocked around 12,000 volunteer hours as they staffed various activities.
