Canada Day and Summer, Perfect
June 30,2010
Massassauga Rattle Snake Provincial Anti-Venom Depot
With the first venomous snakebite patient attended to in June, awareness is again heightened around protocols. Just a reminder, while the West Parry Sound Health Centre has been reestablished as the provincial depot for anti-venom, a rattlesnake bite victim should always go to their nearest hospital as quickly and safely as possible. Calling 911 is your best option.

With 911 a patient is moved to the closest hospital ensuring the appropriate medical decisions are made in the ER. Hospitals within the geographic area of our provincial depot have access to the anti-venom. OPP help move the anti-venom quickly to hospitals when necessary.

Support the Girls Loot on Sale in Whispering Pines, the Health Centre Gift Shop

The West Parry Sound Health Centre is home to a new art installation. Over 50 decorated art-bras grace the walls of the Health Centre with more branching out to downtown Parry Sound.

As part of our $650,000 digital mammography project, we are selling original garments fabricated and manufactured locally at the Parry Sound Sewing Centre. Owner Janet Ferris has assembled a team of volunteer sewers and working with donated material from Northcott Silks Inc, we are now able to offer ‘Georgian Bay Hugs' and ‘Bay Loungers'. When these items are coupled with our silver ‘Believe' jewelry, the Hugs and Loungers are the perfect fashion statement this summer. You can ‘top it all off' with our lightweight microfibre cap.

Visit our shop at www.theBraProject.com to learn more (photos coming of the garments shortly... the weather has interfered grrr). Support the Girls products are available July 1 in Whispering Pines and will also be available at Summer's Perfect Picnic, our gala at Camp Tapawingo, July 22nd. Please visit www.theBraProject.com and join the project. The site translates to 57 languages.

Our volunteer gala team is simply outdoing themselves this year. With our event sold out in 2009, folks are scurrying to buy tickets for Thursday, July 22nd. So don't miss out. The Biosphere Walk, Run, Roll Buys Equipment for ICU and Emergency

On May 30th 2010, our 3rd annual running of the Biosphere Walk Run Roll raised $68,453.17.  Our sponsors pay all event costs ensuring every penny of the $50,200.96 raised through pledges and donations buys equipment for the Health Centre, with a priority on local heart and stroke services.

This year, the event purchased a second Bi-PAPP machine for ICU/Emergency, pedometers for Cardiac Rehab Patients and the remainder is designated towards our digital mammography unit. In 2010, the West Parry Sound Health Centre is celebrating its 5th anniversary. We have close to $5,000,000 in equipment needs. Events like our Biosphere Run and the support we receive from all participants helps to keep the Health Centre up-to-date with technology. We simply couldn't do it without you. Thank you!

Registration opens Valentine's Day 2011 and Dr. Fargher will be on site to fire the start gun 9 am Sunday May 29, 2011.

Wanted: Celebrities Keen to Help a Cause
The local MOOSE FM radio is hosting a radio-thon on Thursday August 12th for our Support the Girls, Digital Mammography Campaign.

From 6 am to 6 pm Health Centre Ambassadors will be staffing the lines, ready to take donations from the entire community. But we need celebrity buzz to make the radio-thon a true success. If you know someone who lives or cottages here and is blessed to have achieved celebrity status in the entertainment, sports or news business convince them to help.

We are a little community with a big cause, big names help! Please contact us today.

Parry Sound - The Place to be on Canada Day
As an x-Quebecer I'm always excited by Canada Day celebrations... they still feel new despite the decades that have passed since living in La Belle Province. I've participated in many celebrations across the country but none have charmed me like the event in Parry Sound. The Festival of Sound cruise celebrates Canada's birthday with the Shores of Newfoundland, a "down east" band that specializes in the music of the Maritimes. With the promise of clear skies you sail around Parry Island and several hours later slip back into the harbour. The stars are twinkling above as you stand on deck amidst the magic of hundreds of boats gussied up with lights for the occasion.  You won't be able to help yourself... everyone bursts into a rousing rendition of OH CANADA as the little boats continuously jockey for space around the Island Queen. Next, the skies simply explode with fireworks! Who can resist? Tickets are $35 - a Canada Day tradition since 1991. Call the Festival to book your tickets: 705-746-2410 (Parry Sound) or toll-free 1-866-364-0061.

Life on the Bay- A Guide to Living on Eastern Georgian Bay

In the spring of 2009, the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve launched the Eastern Georgian Bay Stewardship Guide for property owners. This guide takes readers through an assessment of their environmental performance and provides advice to reduce impacts on land and water. Last summer, three "cottage parties" piloted the guide with cottagers learning to evaluate their properties. The new manual, Life on the Bay - A Guide to Living on Eastern Georgian Bay, incorporates their comments. In 2010, Environment Canada's EcoAction Program is funding stewardship cottage parties throughout eastern Georgian Bay. You can reserve a cottage party now by contacting Christina at: 705.774.0978, or conservation@gbbr.ca.
